the gut-pain is not solid like a rock
or like a dam or a fortified wall,
i can kick at the foundation
make spaces in the crevasses
but only the sea can wash it away
only the sea can wash it away.
watching the gull flying far from home
landing on chrome grey guardrails
the wandering is wild within my soul
as we stop for a gaze piercing the fog
what more can i see but what i sorely miss
i am no longer here with the car and the road
when tears mix with cold and clammy face
it is only the sea that can wash it away
only the sea can wash away.
i would ride like a curragh on windy waves
without time at my helm or time at my wheel
without weathered wrinkled skin etched with tales
longing for deliverance from dozens of dreams
that only the sea can wash away
only the sea can wash away.
